Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi was admitted to Medanta Hospital on Wednesday for a minor medical procedure.

Earlier, sources informed that the veteran Congress leader was admitted to the private hospital in Gurugram late Tuesday night and remained under observation as doctors carried out medical examinations and investigations, per a report by The Times of India.

Sources cited by ANI said the 79-year-old leader was undergoing a routine procedure and was in stable condition. Reports also stated that doctors were examining her for possible stomach-related and urinary tract infections alongside the scheduled treatment. Hospital authorities, however, did not immediately release a detailed medical bulletin about the exact nature of the procedure.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh later confirmed to Livemint that Sonia Gandhi had undergone a routine medical check-up and had returned home after the examination. “She is now back home,” he said while addressing media queries regarding her health condition.

Routine procedure and monitoring

According to reports of Livemint, Sonia Gandhi was kept under medical supervision for several hours as part of the standard procedure. Sources familiar with the matter said there was no immediate cause for concern and that her condition remained stable throughout the process. Doctors at Medanta reportedly advised temporary observation considering her age and recent health history.

The Congress leader has been under regular medical care over the past few years and has occasionally travelled abroad for health-related consultations. Her recent admission once again drew attention to her health, with party workers and senior Congress leaders enquiring about her condition throughout the day.

Several Congress leaders expressed relief after confirmation emerged that she had safely returned home following the procedure. No official statement from the Gandhi family.

Third hospitalisation this year

This marks Sonia Gandhi’s third hospital visit in 2026. Earlier in March, she was admitted to Delhi’s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital after suffering from fever linked to a systemic infection. At the time, doctors had monitored her condition closely before discharging her after improvement in her health.

Before that, she had also undergone treatment related to respiratory discomfort and bronchial asthma-related complications. Sonia Gandhi has faced recurring health concerns over the last several years, prompting the Congress leadership to reduce her public engagements and travel schedules.

Despite her health issues, she continues to remain an important figure within the Congress party and plays a key role in major organisational and political decisions. Though she has stepped back from active day-to-day politics, Sonia Gandhi frequently attends crucial parliamentary discussions, party strategy meetings and alliance-related consultations.

Political significance

Sonia Gandhi, one of the longest-serving Congress presidents, continues to hold considerable influence within the party. She currently serves as the chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party and remains closely involved in guiding the organisation during election campaigns and major political developments.

Her latest hospitalisation comes at a time when the Congress party is preparing for several organisational programmes and political campaigns across states. Party leaders, however, maintained that the admission was part of a planned medical procedure and not linked to any emergency situation
