Marvel Studios appears to have found its most brutal and emotionally grounded antihero story yet with The Punisher: One Last Kill, the new Disney+ Special Presentation led by Jon Bernthal.

The 48-minute special marks Bernthal’s return as Frank Castle after his recent appearance in Daredevil: Born Again, and early reactions suggest the actor has delivered what many fans are calling his strongest performance in the role so far.

Directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, the special combines relentless close-quarter violence with a deeper psychological exploration of grief, trauma and revenge. Critics have compared its action style to The Raid, with several sequences unfolding inside a cramped apartment building where Frank Castle is forced into survival mode without his usual arsenal.

Jon Bernthal’s Punisher takes centre stage

Bernthal first portrayed Frank Castle in Netflix’s Daredevil in 2016 before headlining two seasons of The Punisher. While those earlier projects built a loyal fan following, One Last Kill appears to push the character into even darker territory.

According to early reviews, the special spends much of its opening act focusing on Frank’s PTSD and emotional collapse before violence pulls him back into action. Rather than relying heavily on dialogue, the project reportedly uses Bernthal’s physical performance and expressions to convey the character’s mental state.

The story also introduces Ma Gnucci, played by Judith Light, whose vendetta against Frank drives much of the conflict. Supporting performances from Jason R. Moore and Andre Royo have also received praise.

One of the biggest talking points surrounding the special has been Marvel’s willingness to embrace a hard-R-style tone. Fight scenes reportedly feature graphic hand-to-hand combat, knife attacks and brutal shootouts that stand apart from the studio’s more traditional superhero formula.

MCU connections remain limited

Despite fan speculation, The Punisher: One Last Kill reportedly contains very few direct links to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The special does not deeply explore Frank Castle’s absence during the events of Daredevil: Born Again, nor does it heavily set up his upcoming appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Instead, the project focuses almost entirely on Frank himself and functions as a contained character-driven story.

Still, the response has intensified calls for Marvel Studios to move ahead with a larger standalone Punisher project, whether as a film or a full streaming series.

The special is now streaming on Disney+.
