Meta has announced a major leadership change, naming Kunal Shah as the new global head of WhatsApp. He will succeed Will Cathcart, who has overseen the messaging platform for nearly seven years. As part of the transition, Shah will step away from his leadership role at CRED, with Miten Sampat taking charge as interim CEO.
Sharing the news on LinkedIn, Shah wrote, “Today, CRED is ready for its next phase. I am stepping back, and Miten Sampat steps in as interim CEO, partnered with an incredibly talented team.” He added, “As for me, I’ll be joining Meta to lead WhatsApp globally.”

Before becoming a household name in India's startup ecosystem, Shah experimented with multiple business ventures. His breakthrough came in 2010 when he launched FreeCharge, a digital payments platform that quickly gained popularity. In 2015, Snapdeal acquired FreeCharge in a deal reportedly valued at about $450 million. Shah continued with the company as founder, CEO and chairman until 2016.
Building CRED into a fintech giant
After leaving FreeCharge, Shah spent several years mentoring founders, investing in startups and working with technology-focused organisations. In April 2018, he launched CRED with an initial investment of $1 million from his own funds.
The platform began by rewarding users for timely credit card bill payments but gradually expanded into lending, insurance, commerce, wealth management, payments and credit card services. Over the years, CRED has emerged as one of India's most recognised fintech brands.
Backing startups and shaping India's tech ecosystem
Apart from founding companies, Shah has held advisory and board-level positions across the startup ecosystem. He has worked with organisations such as Y Combinator, IAMAI, Sequoia Capital, AngelList and Bennett Coleman and Co. Ltd.
