Hanuman temple tragedy: 5 killed and over 30 injured

A slab of the roof and a supporting pillar of a Hanuman temple in Maharashtra's Parbhani collapsed on devotees on Saturday afternoon.

A peaceful Saturday afternoon turned into tragedy when the concrete roof of an under construction assembly hall collapsed at the Yashwadi Hanuman temple in Parbhani district, Maharashtra on June 20, 2026. The incident took place around 3pm when devotees gathered for a weekly Kirtan and Mahaprashad. At least 5 killed and several others got injured.

As Saturday is associated with Lord Hanuman, the temple drew an unusually large crowd. A section of the roof and a supporting pillar of the under-construction assembly hall suddenly collapsed causing panic among worshippers.

Cause still a mystery

Rescue teams rushed to the spot, pulling survivors from the rubble in a coordinated effort. According to preliminary information, at least eight to ten people reported suffered serious injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals by the rescue teams. The assembly hall had reportedly been under construction for the past several days.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis paid tribute to the deceased and said that administration officials were overseeing relief operations on the ground. District Guardian Minister Meghana Bordikar assured financial aid for the victims' families. The cause of the collapse is yet to be disclosed.

PM Modi expresses grief

In a post on X, the Prime Minister’s Office said,"The loss of lives due to the collapse of a wall in Parbhani, Maharashtra, is deeply saddening. My thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones in this mishap. May the injured recover at the earliest." CCTV footage of the incident spread rapidly on social media, drawing crowds of locals to the site and forcing police to step in for crowd control.
