A recent auction for a fancy vehicle number plate set a new record in India, with the registration number HR88B8888 being sold for Rs 1.17 crore. This Haryana number, meant for premium vehicles, is now the costliest number plate ever auctioned in the country.
Meet Sudhir Kumar, who placed the Rs 1.17 crore bid for HR88B8888
As per a Times of India report, a Haryana-based businessman named Sudhir Kumar made the highest bid and secured India’s most expensive number plate. The Badhra sub-division in Charkhi Dadri district received the top bid amount for the registration number "HR-88-B-8888", officials confirmed.

The auction took place through an online bidding system on the official portal, where participants paid Rs 1,000 as the entry fee and Rs 10,000 as a security deposit.
The 30-year-old bidder told PTI, “I had not kept any specific amount in mind and liked the number and just went ahead,” adding that he has not yet decided which vehicle he will assign the plate to.
He also said, “I was not expecting that this bid would generate such hype. We are in the transport business. We also have a software company, and we are into developing a transport-related mobile app for commercial transportation, and this business is in its early phase.”

How 'HR-88-B-8888' will be allotted to the winning bidder
Officials explained that the bidder has five days to deposit the full bid amount. Once he completes the payment within the deadline, the number will be officially allotted.
Haryana conducts online auctions for VIP and special series registration numbers on fancy.parivahan.gov.in. The bidding starts every Friday at 5 pm and closes on Monday at 9 am. Results are declared the following Wednesday at 5 pm. Participants can choose their desired number, and the highest bidder gets it after completing payment, according to NDTV.
A TOI report mentioned that the bidder has so far paid only Rs 11,000, which includes the Rs 1,000 registration fee and Rs 10,000 security deposit. The auction will be finalised only after he pays the entire bid amount within five days.
According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways website, the allotment status is currently listed as “assignment pending”.
