A dinner date in New York took a surprising turn when artificial intelligence suddenly entered the conversation and wound up spilling a secret that none of the people at the table expected.
The story, posted online by dating coach Blaine Anderson, has been widely shared for its chilling mix of dating oddities and a reliance on technology.
A date that felt increasingly off
The story is told from the perspective of a 27-year-old woman who went on a first date with a finance expert in his late 40s. The date began normally but soon took a strange turn.
The man kept taking out his phone to check ChatGPT. Whether it was cocktail party trivia or random information, he read the answers that the chatbot gave him aloud instead of engaging with his date. At first, it seemed like an odd quirk, but it quickly became a problem.
Anderson noted that the woman felt as though the date did not have much natural conversation, with the chatbot taking up too much of the space at the table.

Calling out the chatbot habit
As the evening wrapped up, the woman to play it cool about the whole experience. According to Anderson’s post, she joked about how dependent he is on ChatGPT.
Rather than brushing it off, he went along with the joke. He told her, with a smile, that ChatGPT is his “best friend” and even handed over his phone, asking her to ask ChatGPT anything she wanted to know about him.
What happened next turned the date on its head.
One question, one unexpected reveal
Amused and curious, the woman typed a personal prompt into ChatGPT, asking it to spill something about him that he wouldn’t normally talk about.
The response shocked them both. ChatGPT praised him as a loving husband and father – something she had never heard from him in their conversation.
It was in this moment that she realized her date was actually married with kids, something he had conveniently left out of their conversation earlier.

The internet weighs in
Anderson uploaded the story on January 27, and it went viral online, garnering millions of views and thousands of comments.
While some users questioned the authenticity of the incident, Anderson intervened to clarify that the story was not fabricated. A user wrote, “Why does this sound like a fake Reddit homepage story?” Anderson responded saying, “My life would be easier, and my business would be bigger, if I could fabricate million-view posts like this.”
Others took a more lighthearted approach, commenting on the humor of an AI discovering a personal truth on a first date. One user commented, “This is exactly why you don’t bring your AI best friend on a first date.” “If ChatGPT exposes you like this, that’s on you”, joked another. A third user wrote, “Imagine finding out someone is married because of a chatbot”, while another user wrote, “AI did her a favour.”
