A mango-themed celebration in San Francisco has captured widespread attention on social media after videos showed hundreds of people gathering to sample some of India's most sought-after mango varieties. The event, which featured free tastings of Alphonso, Kesar, Chaunsa and other popular mangoes, has highlighted the growing popularity of Indian mangoes in the United States.

What the video on X showed

The gathering gained traction online as attendees shared videos of long queues and enthusiastic crowds enjoying the seasonal fruit. Among those documenting the event was X user Jared Seidel, who described the atmosphere as energetic and welcoming. Seidel also revealed that he had helped organise the celebration and was interviewed by the San Francisco Chronicle during the event.

The annual event was organised by Indian-origin community leader Darshil and was conceived as both a cultural gathering and an opportunity to introduce authentic Indian mango varieties to a broader audience. Now in its fourth year, the celebration has become a popular fixture for Indian-Americans seeking a taste of home while also offering newcomers the chance to experience varieties such as Alphonso, Kesar, and Chaunsa.

Throughout the event, volunteers distributed hundreds of mangoes free of charge, peeling, slicing, and serving the fruit to visitors. Videos from the venue showed attendees eagerly lining up for tastings, while many later took to social media to praise the sweetness and flavour of the mangoes.

"Indian Mango party, Best mangos I've had. Incredible vibes," Seidel wrote on X while sharing photographs from the gathering.

Growing demand of Indian mangoes in the US

The event comes amid growing demand for Indian mangoes across the United States. Limited seasonal imports often sell out quickly, making the fruit a highly anticipated luxury item among consumers drawn to its distinctive flavour and short availability window.

Social media users responded enthusiastically to posts about the event. One user commented, "Nothing beats diving into the pure rasa of Indian mangoes in full community mode! So glad you got to experience the king of fruits and those unbeatable summer vibes in SF."

Another wrote, "Indians have a separate spot for Mangoes in our hearts, reserved only for mangoes."

Bringing Indian mangoes to American markets requires a carefully regulated export process. Before shipment, the fruit undergoes controlled gamma irradiation at a specialised facility in Mumbai, helping extend shelf life and meet import requirements while maintaining quality and flavour.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, India produces more than 20 million metric tonnes of mangoes annually, accounting for nearly half of global production. Despite this, the country exports only one percent of its fresh mangoes, a statistic that recently went viral and sparked curiosity across the global online community.
