Accidentally deleting a direct message on Instagram can be an annoying experience, especially since the platform does not offer any option to restore removed conversations. Adding to the confusion, Meta’s Help Centre provides limited guidance on recovering deleted chats, leaving many users unsure of their options when important messages disappear.
Steps to recover deleted messages
Although there is no guarantee that deleted conversations can be restored, Instagram users may still be able to access previously deleted chats through the platform’s data export feature. The process is not immediate and requires several steps, but it can provide access to account information, including messages, in certain cases.

To begin the process, users must log in to Instagram through a desktop or laptop web browser, as the recovery method is currently unavailable through the Instagram mobile app on Android and iOS devices. After signing in, users need to open their profile by clicking the profile icon located at the bottom of the left-hand side panel. From there, they should select the “Edit Profile” option displayed next to their username.
The next step involves navigating to the Accounts Centre through the settings panel. Users must then select “See More in Accounts Centre” and proceed to the “Your Information and Permissions” section under Account Settings.
Within this menu, users can choose the “export your information” option, which enables them to download a copy of their Instagram account data. By selecting “create export,” they can initiate a request that includes messages and other activity associated with their profile.
What if the user has multiple accounts?
For users with multiple Instagram accounts linked to a single Meta profile, it is essential to select the correct account carefully before proceeding with the export request. Instagram also allows users to decide where the exported information will be saved, either directly to their device or through an external service.
Before submitting the request, the platform provides a summary outlining the type of data being downloaded, the file format, and the destination. Users who only wish to view the information are advised to select the HTML format. Instagram also offers options to customise the export by including or excluding specific categories of account data.

To complete the process, users must re-enter their Instagram password for verification. Meta will then process the request and send an email notification once the export file is ready for download. Regularly backing up account data remains the safest way to prevent the permanent loss of important messages.
