Putting an end to days of political speculation, former CPI(M) youth leader Pratik Ur Rahman joined the Trinamool Congress on Saturday. He was formally handed the party flag by All India General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee at the Trinamool party office in Amtala.
Last Sunday, Pratik Ur had submitted a letter seeking release from the CPI(M)’s state committee, district committee, and primary membership. The development triggered controversy after the letter surfaced in the media, fuelling intense discussions in political circles.
He was absent from the subsequent CPI(M) state committee meeting. On Friday, CPI(M) state secretary Mohammad Selim confirmed that Pratik’s resignation had been accepted. A day later, Pratik himself hinted that he was set to join a new political party, paving the way for Saturday’s formal induction into the Trinamool Congress.
