Former footballer and ex-MLA Dipendu Biswas on Sunday rejoined the Trinamool Congress in Basirhat, ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. He returned to the party after leaving the BJP.
Biswas joined the party at the Basirhat organisational district office in the presence of MLA Saptarshi Banerjee and TMC district president Burhanul Mukaddim (Liton). Along with him, 28 members from Congress, BJP, CPI(M), and ISF also joined Trinamool.
"I will fulfil whatever responsibility the party gives me," Biswas said after his induction into Trinamool in Basirhat.
Dipendu Biwas's political journey
Dipendu Biswas was first fielded by Trinamool Congress in the 2014 Basirhat South bypoll but lost narrowly to BJP's Samik Bhattacharya. In 2016, he defeated Bhattacharya and became MLA from Basirhat South.

In 2021, Trinamool Congress changed its candidate and nominated Saptarshi Banerjee instead. After being denied a ticket, Biswas joined the BJP in the presence of then state president Dilip Ghosh. Though he campaigned for the BJP in 2021, he distanced himself from the party after Trinamool's massive victory in the last assembly elections.
Return to TMC ahead of 2026 polls
Dipendu Biswas had earlier written to the Trinamool leadership seeking re-entry, but his request was not accepted then. But the party has taken him back now.

District leaders did not clarify whether he would get a ticket in 2026. MLA Saptarshi Banerjee said the return of a former MLA and noted footballer has strengthened the party. He added that they will work together for Basirhat's development.
With elections approaching, Dipendu Biswas's homecoming has become the most talked-about political development in the district.
