PM Modi inaugurates 82 km Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat route, flags off India’s fastest metro

PM Narendra Modi flags off the Meerut Metro and completes the 82 km Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat corridor, promising faster travel, seamless connectivity and a major push to urban mobility in western Uttar Pradesh.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday flagged off the Meerut Metro and Namo Bharat train from Shatabdi Nagar station, marking the completion of the 82 km Delhi Meerut Namo Bharat corridor. The launch is expected to significantly improve high-speed intercity connectivity and streamline daily commuting within Meerut.

The Prime Minister also undertook a metro ride from Shatabdi Nagar to Meerut South station. During the visit, he inaugurated and dedicated development projects worth around ₹12,930 crore in Meerut and addressed a public gathering, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office.

82 km corridor fully operational

With the inauguration, the entire Delhi Meerut Namo Bharat corridor has become operational. The remaining stretches, including the 5 km section between Sarai Kale Khan and New Ashok Nagar in Delhi and the 21 km stretch between Meerut South and Modipuram in Uttar Pradesh, were also opened.

Namo Bharat, India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), has a design speed of 180 kmph. The corridor connects key urban centres such as Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Modinagar and Meerut with Delhi, offering faster travel between the National Capital and western Uttar Pradesh.

Sarai Kale Khan station serves as the originating point of the corridor. It is designed as a multi-modal transport hub with links to Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station, the Delhi Metro Pink Line, Veer Haqeeqat Rai ISBT and the Ring Road. In Meerut, Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul and Modipuram stations were commissioned as part of the expansion.

Meerut Metro on shared infrastructure

The Prime Minister also inaugurated the Meerut Metro services between Meerut South and Modipuram. The metro will operate on the same infrastructure as Namo Bharat, a first in the country.

With a maximum operational speed of around 120 kmph, the Meerut Metro is expected to cover the full stretch in about 30 minutes, including scheduled stops. The integrated system is aimed at reducing road congestion and lowering vehicular carbon dioxide emissions while enhancing urban mobility.
