As political activity builds momentum ahead of the vote counting, the weather across South Bengal has shifted in the opposite direction. Frequent nor’wester spells, along with thick thundercloud cover, have brought a noticeable dip in temperatures, creating a “cool and pleasant” feel across the region. On Thursday evening, heavy rainfall lashed Kolkata and nearby districts, clearing out the typical sticky heat associated with late April.

The Meteorological Department has indicated that there is no immediate sign of heat making a comeback. Instead, conditions remain favourable for continued spells of rain and thunderstorms across both South and North Bengal over the next few days.

Rain and strong winds across districts

Rainfall activity is expected to continue across all districts on Friday. The Alipore weather office has warned of strong winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 km/h in several parts of South Bengal. Along with gusty winds, steady showers are likely.

In North Bengal, the situation could be more intense. Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri are likely to witness extremely heavy rainfall, possibly reaching up to 200 mm. Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Cooch Behar may receive between 70 and 110 mm of rain. Thunderstorms with lightning and winds of 30 to 50 km/h are expected across all districts. Scattered rain is also likely to continue in North Bengal on Sunday.

Will rain persist till counting day?

Weather activity is not expected to ease soon. On May 4, the vote-counting day, rainfall is likely to intensify across the state. Winds may continue to blow at speeds of 30 to 50 km/h.

In South Bengal, districts such as Nadia, Murshidabad, Birbhum, North and South 24 Parganas, East Burdwan, and East Midnapore are expected to remain under the influence of rain and thunderstorms until Tuesday.
