Drinking water supply will be disrupted across vast areas of South Kolkata and its adjoining suburbs on Saturday, January 31, due to scheduled maintenance work at the Garden Reach pumping station and its pipeline network. After Saturday morning, water supply from multiple booster pumping stations under the Garden Reach Water Project will be halted.

According to Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) sources, water service will remain normal between 6:00 am and 9:30 am on Saturday. After that, drinking water supply will be suspended. Normal supply is expected to resume from Sunday morning, February 1.

As a result of the shutdown, extensive areas of south and south-east Kolkata will either face a complete water cut or partial disruption throughout the day.

Why the water supply is being stopped

Municipal officials stated that regular maintenance is essential to ensure uninterrupted water supply throughout the year. During inspections, cracks and leakage points were detected in several pipelines under the Garden Reach project, leading to water wastage. Repair and maintenance work will be carried out at these locations on January 31.

Areas likely to be affected

On Saturday, water supply will be disrupted in multiple parts of South Kolkata, including Garden Reach, Jadavpur, Tollygunge, Kasba, Behala, Thakurpukur and Joka, covering nearly nine boroughs of the city.

Water will not be available from booster pumping stations located at Kalighat, Ranikuthi, Garfa, Chetla, Golf Green, Layalka, Behala, Sirity, Daspara, Bansdroni, Gandhi Maidan, Senpalli, Prafulla Park, Parnashree, Metiaburuz and Shakuntala Park, along with several capsule booster pumping stations under the Garden Reach water project.

Civic authorities have advised residents to store adequate drinking water in advance to avoid inconvenience during the shutdown period.
