After days of relentless heat, a change in the weather is on the horizon for South Bengal. The Alipore Meteorological Department has indicated that all districts in the region are likely to witness thunderstorms accompanied by lightning on Tuesday. For Kolkata, rain is expected later in the day, offering some relief from the sweltering conditions.

Since morning, the city has been oscillating between bright sunshine and overcast skies. Despite occasional cloud cover, discomfort levels have remained high due to persistent humidity. The Meteorological Department has said that there is a possibility of rain in Kolkata after the afternoon.

Temperature readings reflect the uneasy conditions. The minimum temperature settled at 29.2 degrees Celsius, which is 2.5 degrees above normal, while the maximum reached 35.9 degrees Celsius, slightly above the seasonal average.

Nor’westers likely across several districts

Weather activity is expected to intensify across South Bengal over the next two days. Districts such as Nadia, East Bardhaman and Birbhum are likely to witness nor’westers, locally known as Kalbaisakhi storms, which typically bring strong winds and brief spells of rain.

The department has said, "all districts in South Bengal are likely to experience thunderstorms with lightning." However, this shift may not bring immediate comfort. Even with rainfall, humidity levels are expected to rise, keeping conditions uncomfortable. In some western districts, temperatures could still climb close to 40 degrees Celsius during the week.

In contrast, North Bengal is set for more intense weather activity. The likelihood of heavy rainfall is higher across the region, with districts from Darjeeling to Malda expected to experience gusty winds ranging between 40 and 50 kilometres per hour along with rain and lightning.

The changing weather pattern signals a temporary break from extreme heat in parts of the state, but for many areas, especially in the south, relief may remain limited due to rising moisture in the air.
