Who is Damayanti Sen? Ex-IPS officer chosen by Bengal BJP government for women's panel

Sen had gained national attention during the investigation into the 2012 Park Street gang rape case in Kolkata, one of the most discussed criminal cases in Bengal at the time.

Former IPS officer Damayanti Sen, known for handling the investigation into the 2012 Park Street rape case, has been included in a newly-formed committee on violence against women in West Bengal.

The committee has been constituted by the government led by West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari to examine complaints related to violence against women and institutional corruption in the state.

Per a report by Hindustan Times, according to the announcement, two separate commissions have been formed under retired judges of the Calcutta High Court. The committee dealing with crimes against women will be headed by retired Justice Sampath Chatterjee and is scheduled to begin work from June 1.

Role in the Park Street rape case

Damayanti Sen had gained national attention during the investigation into the 2012 Park Street gang rape case in Kolkata, one of the most discussed criminal cases in Bengal at the time.

The incident had triggered sharp political reactions and public protests. In February 2012, police investigating the case arrested three accused persons. Several individuals, including Kader Khan, were named in connection with the case.

Over the years, the Park Street case remained one of the defining moments of Damayanti Sen’s policing career. The victim later died several years after the incident.

Career in Kolkata Police

Apart from the Park Street investigation, Damayanti Sen held several important positions in the Kolkata Police.

She served as Deputy Commissioner in both the Central and North divisions of Kolkata Police and later worked in the Detective Department for several years.

An economics student by academic background, Damayanti Sen also became the first woman Joint Commissioner of Kolkata Police.

Committee to begin work from June

The new committee has been formed after recent political changes in the state following the 2026 Assembly elections.

The panel is expected to look into complaints related to crimes against women and other related matters across the state once it begins functioning next month.
