Vehicle documents verification and fitness checks are being carried out across the nation to curb frequent road accidents. However, during these inspections, a very common issue that has been constantly reported is disputes between drivers and transport department officials.

Drivers and vehicle owners have alleged that fines are sometimes imposed even when documents and regulations are in order. To ensure transparency in the checking process, the transport department has made body cameras mandatory for all such operations. On Tuesday, body cameras were formally handed over to officials in front of the Midnapore district administrative building. Officials also conducted checks on multiple vehicles, from passenger buses to small cars, in the Nimtauri area along the Haldia and Mecheda national highway.

Body cameras mandatory for transport officials

According to the administration’s directive, the entire checking process will now be recorded through body cameras. This move is expected to maintain transparency while enabling officials to respond clearly to queries from vehicle owners and drivers.

Around 1,000 buses operate on long-distance and local routes in the East Midnapore district. In addition, with tourist centres such as Digha and Mandarmani located in the district, a large number of passenger vehicles travel regularly from different parts of the state. About a month ago, the East Midnapore district police had also directed traffic personnel to use body cameras. The district transport department has now adopted a similar measure.

Move aimed at reducing disputes during vehicle checks

Bus driver Sarbananda Pradhan said, “Many times it is seen that some drivers do not follow rules or do not maintain their vehicles properly. Again, some get involved in arguments while checking. Now,if there are cameras, it will benefit both sides. We also want regular checking to be conducted by the administration in this manner.”

Regional transport department official Sanjay Haldar said, “This initiative by the district administration is commendable. Probably, this is the first district in West Bengal where directives for the use of body cameras by transport officials have been issued. Various situations arise during vehicle checking. Having cameras will largely avoid that. We will be able to work with a more open mind.”
