No pesticides are needed, and large tracts of land aren’t required either. Yet farmers can cultivate crops throughout the year and earn more. With these advantages in mind, Jhargram’s horticulture department is now prioritising polyhouse farming. On Thursday, a two-day workshop on the technique began at the district magistrate’s auditorium, drawing over a hundred farmers from the Jangalmahal region.
During the first day, experts explained the methods, benefits, and profitability of polyhouse farming. Farmers were also informed that the government will cover 50% of the investment required to set up a polyhouse.
On Friday, the second day of the workshop, participants will receive hands-on training in polyhouse farming techniques.

Farmers from Belpahari, Lalgarh, Jamboni, Gopiballabhpur, Sankrail and several other areas attended the session. Rajendra Machavaram, a faculty member from IIT Kharagpur’s Agriculture and Food Engineering Department, conducted an in-depth briefing on the subject. State Horticulture Director Diptendru Bera, Joint Director Kaushik Chakraborty, Jhargram Zilla Parishad Chairperson Chinmayi Marandi, Additional District Magistrate (Development) Arup Dutta, and officials from the district agriculture department were also present.
Speaking about the initiative, farmer Sushil Ruidas from Nahariya said, “Heavy rains and droughts cause huge losses in farming. To avoid these losses and increase my income, I want to adopt polyhouse farming.”
