In a move that has sent ripples through South Asia’s fragile security landscape, Afghanistan has claimed it launched coordinated airstrikes on key Pakistani military installations. The announcement, issued by Kabul’s defence establishment, signals one of the most direct and high-stakes confrontations between the two neighbours in recent years. While details remain contested, the claim alone has intensified anxieties in a region long accustomed to uneasy truces and sudden escalations.

Strategic bases in the crosshairs

Afghanistan’s Ministry of National Defence said its Air Force conducted “precise and coordinated” aerial operations targeting significant Pakistani military facilities. Among the sites named was the strategically sensitive Nur Khan Airbase, located in Rawalpindi near the Pakistani capital. The base is regarded as a crucial logistical and operational hub, making it symbolically and militarily important.

Kabul also identified the 12th Division headquarters in Quetta, Balochistan, and Khwazai Camp in Mohmand Agency of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as targets. Afghan officials described the operations as calculated strikes against specific military assets, though they did not provide detailed assessments of damage or casualties. Independent verification of the claims remains limited, and Pakistan had not released a comprehensive official response at the time of writing. However, the targeting of installations of such prominence is likely to deepen already fraught relations between the two countries.

A region on edge

The strikes come against a backdrop of persistent cross-border tensions, militant activity, and mutual accusations over security lapses along the disputed frontier. Over the years, both Kabul and Islamabad have blamed each other for harbouring or failing to curb armed groups operating near the border.

Nur Khan Airbase has previously figured in regional military narratives, including reports of it being referenced during India’s Operation Sindoor, underscoring its strategic weight. Its mention once again places it at the centre of shifting power dynamics in South Asia. Security analysts warn that even if the immediate military impact proves limited, the political consequences could be far-reaching. Direct aerial engagement between neighbouring states carries risks of retaliation, miscalculation and broader instability.

Afghanistan’s claim of striking key Pakistani bases marks a dramatic and potentially dangerous chapter in bilateral relations. Whether this episode evolves into a sustained confrontation or prompts urgent diplomatic outreach remains uncertain. What is clear, however, is that the region stands at a delicate crossroads, where a single escalation could reshape the security calculus for years to come.
