United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has strongly condemned the escalating military confrontation in the Middle East, warning that continued strikes and retaliatory attacks risk spiralling into a broader, uncontrollable conflict.

In a statement addressing the latest developments involving the United States, Israel and Iran, Guterres cautioned that the region is already considered one of the most volatile in the world. It cannot withstand further destabilisation.

Warning against a dangerous chain reaction

“I condemn the military escalation in the Middle East today,” Guterres said. He added that the strikes by the US and Israel against Iran, followed by Iranian retaliatory attacks, undermine international security and stability. “These actions carry the risk of igniting a chain of events that no one can control in the most volatile region of the world,” he warned. The UN chief’s remarks come amid rising tensions and fears that the confrontation could expand beyond current flashpoints.

Call for peaceful dialogue

Guterres stressed that sustainable peace cannot be achieved through military means.

“Lasting peace can only be achieved through peaceful means, including genuine dialogue and negotiations,” he said, urging all parties to exercise restraint.

He also reaffirmed that the United Nations Charter remains the foundation for maintaining international peace and security.
