A major setback has struck Blue Origin after its New Glenn rocket exploded during a ground test at Cape Canaveral, Florida, raising fresh questions about the company’s launch schedule and lunar mission plans.
This accident took place around 9 pm at the Launch Complex-36 in Cape Canaveral, Florida. The company was testing the rocket in a hotfire test before launching it into space. Videos showing flames and smoke covering some areas of the Launch Complex are being shared online.

Blue Origin later confirmed the incident in a statement posted on social media. “We experienced an anomaly during today’s hotfire test. All personnel have been accounted for. We will provide updates as we learn more,” the company said.
What happened during the test?
The explosion took place during a static fire test, a routine but critical stage of rocket development in which engines are ignited while the vehicle remains secured to the launch pad.

The procedure allows engineers to evaluate propulsion systems and identify potential issues before an actual launch attempt. New Glenn, Blue Origin’s flagship orbital rocket, was expected to play a key role in deploying satellite payloads and supporting future lunar missions.
The 320-foot rocket is considered central to the company’s efforts to compete with rival launch providers and establish itself as a major player in the commercial space sector.
All personnel are accounted for and safe. It’s too early to know the root cause but we’re already working to find it. Very rough day, but we’ll rebuild whatever needs rebuilding and get back to flying. It’s worth it.

Following the incident, Jeff Bezos acknowledged the setback in a post on X. “It’s too early to know the root cause but we’re already working to find it,” Bezos wrote.

NASA monitoring potential impact
The explosion has also drawn attention from NASA because of Blue Origin’s involvement in future lunar exploration projects. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said the agency was aware of the anomaly and would assess any potential effects on upcoming programmes.
“Nasa will provide information on any impacts to the Artemis and moon base programmes as it becomes available,” he said on X. Industry observers noted that damage to the Florida launch infrastructure could affect Blue Origin’s ability to conduct near-term launches, although the full extent of the damage remains unclear.
Space journalist Eric Berger suggested the incident could significantly affect the company’s participation in upcoming lunar missions, though no official timeline revisions have been announced.
Space industry reacts
Elon Musk was among those who reacted publicly. The entrepreneur heads SpaceX, a direct competitor to Blue Origin in the commercial space launch business.

Blue Origin has just finished testing its new rocket ahead of a string of planned launches from the company’s launchpad. At the same time, the event took place amid preparations at SpaceX for yet another Falcon 9 mission from the Cape Canaveral Launch Complex.
An essential project for Blue Origin
New Glenn is considered by many to be one of the most important ventures for Blue Origin.
It will likely serve as a platform for commercial, national defense and NASA’s Artemis missions – the United States agency’s program intended to send astronauts to the surface of the Moon once again. The New Glenn rocket is crucial for Blue Origin, which aspires to rival SpaceX with respect to heavy space launchers.
At present, it can be said that all Blue Origin staff are okay and that the incident is under investigation.
