India's military leadership entered a new phase on Sunday as General NS Raja Subramani assumed office as the country's next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), succeeding General Anil Chauhan, who retired on Saturday. On the same day, Admiral Krishna Swaminathan took over as the Chief of the Naval Staff from Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, who demitted office upon retirement.

The leadership transition comes at a crucial time for the armed forces as efforts continue to push forward long-pending military reforms aimed at strengthening joint operations among the Army, Navy and Air Force.

Push for joint military commands gains momentum

As per a report by Hindustan Times, one of the key priorities before the new CDS is expected to be the implementation of integrated theatre commands, a major restructuring initiative designed to improve coordination and operational readiness across the three services.

The proposed framework seeks to bring personnel, assets and military resources under unified commands led by a single commander-in-chief. The objective is to enhance efficiency and prepare the armed forces for future security challenges.

Before retiring, General Chauhan submitted a detailed roadmap on theatreisation to the defence minister. The proposal includes the creation of a northern theatre command focused on China with headquarters in Lucknow, a western theatre command focused on Pakistan in Jaipur, and a maritime theatre command in Thiruvananthapuram.
