Donald Trump on Thursday escalated his criticism of Iran, accusing it of spreading “fake news” about a possible peace agreement and alleging that Iranian forces launched a drone attack on Indian vessels near the Strait of Hormuz.

In a post on Truth Social, the US president said reports circulating about the terms of any deal were false and did not match what had been agreed “in writing,” while also calling Iran’s conduct “dishonourable” and saying the country was acting in bad faith.

Trump's attack allegations and criticism of Iran

Trump also said the alleged strike on “Indian ships” exiting the Strait of Hormuz was “totally unacceptable” and insisted such actions had to stop immediately.

According to the Hindustan Times report, he made the comments a day after the US admitted bombing three vessels carrying Indian crew near the Hormuz Strait, an incident in which three people were killed.

Trump used Truth Social to argue that there was “no such thing as dealing in good faith” with Tehran, and told Iran to “get their act together, and fast.”

JD Vance disputes reports about the proposed deal

US vice president JD Vance separately said there was “a lot of fake information” around a possible Iran deal that would involve reopening the Strait and addressing Iran’s nuclear programme.

Vance denied reports that Iran would receive cash or that money would be released simply for signing a deal or attending talks. He said any economic benefits would depend on Tehran meeting its obligations, and argued that the arrangement could reshape the region and bring lasting peace if implemented.

Competing versions of a deal yet unsigned

Iran had earlier released details of a proposed framework for a potential peace arrangement with the United States, including reopening the Strait of Hormuz within 30 days, releasing about $24 billion in frozen Iranian assets and starting a 60-day negotiation window on nuclear issues.

Iranian officials, however, pushed back on the idea that Tehran would surrender control of the waterway and said no final agreement had been reached.

Trump, meanwhile, claimed progress was moving quickly and suggested a signing ceremony could happen “very soon,” while Iranian state media reported that any such ceremony plan reflected a mistaken reading of Washington’s proposals.
