Canada will begin its FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign against Bosnia and Herzegovina in a historic Group B clash in Toronto, marking the first-ever men's World Cup match played on Canadian soil. The co-hosts enter the tournament carrying momentum and expectations as they seek their first victory in World Cup history.

Jesse Marsch’s side arrives in good form, having put together an impressive unbeaten run heading into the tournament. Canada will once again rely on the attacking quality of Jonathan David, Cyle Larin and Tajon Buchanan, while midfielders Stephen Eustaquio and Ismaël Koné are expected to control proceedings in the centre of the park. Although injury concerns have surrounded a few players, the squad remains one of the strongest Canada has taken to a World Cup.

Canada eye on home advantage

Playing in front of a packed Toronto crowd could prove crucial for Canada. The hosts are expected to adopt an aggressive approach, pressing high and looking to exploit Bosnia’s defensive line with quick transitions. While Canada has never won a World Cup match, confidence within the camp is high after a series of encouraging performances leading up to the tournament.

Bosnia and Herzegovina, meanwhile, returns to the World Cup for only the second time in its history. Sergej Barbarez’s men earned qualification through a remarkable playoff run and arrived with plenty of belief despite being considered underdogs.

Bosnia banking on experience

Veteran striker Edin Deko remains the focal point of Bosnia’s attack and is expected to lead the line alongside a disciplined midfield unit. The Europeans have built a reputation for resilience, often grinding out results in tight contests.

Interestingly, this will be the first-ever meeting between Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina at the senior international level. With both teams viewing the fixture as a key opportunity to secure early points in Group B, a closely fought contest is expected.

Canada may have the edge thanks to home support and greater attacking depth, but Bosnia’s organisation and experience could make life difficult for the tournament hosts.
