A powerful earthquake struck off the coast of southern Italy early Tuesday, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). The quake measured 6.1 on the Richter scale and originated deep beneath the Earth's surface.
GFZ said the earthquake's epicentre was located around 253 kilometres underground, reducing the likelihood of major surface-level damage despite its strong magnitude.
Tremors detected in the Tyrrhenian Sea
India's National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported that the earthquake occurred at approximately 3:42 am IST on Tuesday. The agency placed the epicentre in the Tyrrhenian Sea and estimated the magnitude at 6.0.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage following the earthquake.
Southern California experiences separate quake
Hours before the tremor near Italy, an earthquake was recorded in Southern California. The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake measured 4.1 in magnitude.
The earthquake struck at 3:34 pm local time on Monday near California City in Kern County, north of Edwards Air Force Base.

Aftershock follows minutes later
According to USGS, the quake originated about 3.7 miles below the surface. Residents reported feeling the shaking across parts of the region, with tremors reaching as far south as Palmdale.
Roughly two minutes after the initial earthquake, a 2.6-magnitude aftershock was recorded in the same area.
Officials said there were no reports of injuries or property damage linked to the California earthquake.
