K Annamalai, one of the BJP's most prominent faces in Tamil Nadu, could be on the verge of a major political decision. Sources indicate that the former state BJP president is contemplating an exit from the party and may eventually launch his own political outfit, a move that could reshape opposition politics in the state.

The former IPS officer is expected to hold discussions with senior BJP leadership in Delhi, even as speculation over his future continues to intensify. While Annamalai has not publicly confirmed any decision, his recent remarks and political positioning have added fuel to the rumours.

Rift emerges after electoral disappointment

According to NDTV, the reported developments come in the aftermath of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, where the BJP struggled to translate its growing visibility into electoral gains. Despite years of aggressive campaigning and grassroots outreach under Annamalai's leadership, the party secured only a limited presence in the state legislature.

Sources suggest that Annamalai believes his role within the party has diminished in recent months. Reports indicate that he was offered a Rajya Sabha berth, an offer he is said to have declined. His absence from the Assembly election battlefield and a reduced role in the campaign further strengthened speculation that he was being sidelined.

New movement may be first step

According to NDTV, Annamalai is considering launching a public movement before formally unveiling a political party. The initiative is expected to focus on attracting professionals, young volunteers and individuals interested in leadership and public service.

His existing leadership platform, "We The Leaders", could become the foundation for a broader political organisation. Political observers believe such a model would allow him to build a support base gradually before entering electoral contests independently.

Posters calling upon Annamalai to lead supporters have already appeared across parts of Chennai ahead of his birthday, highlighting the personal following he has cultivated over the years.

A rising leader at a crossroads

According to NDTV, Annamalai's journey from the Indian Police Service to active politics has been closely watched in Tamil Nadu. Since joining the BJP in 2020, he has emerged as one of the party's most recognisable leaders in the state and played a key role in expanding its grassroots presence.

His recent criticism of the Centre over the implementation of the three-language policy was also seen by many as a sign of increasing political independence. Whether he ultimately remains within the BJP or launches a separate platform, his next move is likely to have significant implications for Tamil Nadu's political landscape ahead of future elections.
