On Friday, January 16, Russia stated that it considers Greenland to be a territory of Denmark amid US President Donald Trump's persistent assertions to take over the island, and make it a part of the United States, Reuters reported.
What did Russia say?
Along with stating that it considers Greenland as Danish territory, the Kremlin said that Italy, France, and Germany's desire to restart discussions on Ukraine with Moscow was an important development, and that it matches the way Russia thinks things should be evolving.
Moscow also made a point that the claims made by the US on Russia and China threatening Greenland are unacceptable, and that the Greenland episode showcased the double standards of the West, which tends to claim higher moral ground, Reuters reported.

The remarks come amid US President Donald Trump's calls to annex Greenland and make it a part of the United States. Greenland is an autonomous territory of NATO ally Denmark. President Trump has argued that Greenland is critical to US security due to its strategic location and vast mineral resources. The US President has time and again said that he will use force if necessary to gain control over the island. In response, several European countries this week deployed small contingents of military personnel to the island at Denmark's request.
US delegation reaches Denmark
A congressional delegation of US lawmakers has reached Denmark, and is scheduled to meet Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and her Greenlandic counterpart Jens-Frederik Nielsen. The 11-member delegation is led by Democratic Senator Chris Coons, and consists of Republican Senators Thom Tillis and Lisa Murkowski.

The bipartisan delegation will be meeting with the Danish and Greenlandic leaders to assure them that the US Congress would be of support to them, even if President Trump tries to bulldoze his way through, Reuters reported.
The congressional visit follows a high-stakes meeting at the White House on Wednesday, January 14, where Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen and Greenlandic Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt met with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President J.D. Vance. The Danish officials expressed regret that they had not been able to change the stance of the US administration after the meeting, Reuters reported.
