Stand-up comedian Yash Bhardwaj has shared details of what he describes as one of the most difficult periods of his life, revealing that he spent 47 days in detention in Dubai before being deported to India.
The comedian, who had been based in Dubai, disclosed the incident through an Instagram post, saying he was taken into custody after authorities objected to a comedy reel he posted online earlier this year. According to Bhardwaj, the experience left a deep emotional and financial impact on both him and his family.
Reel reportedly triggered police action
In his statement, Bhardwaj said the events began on March 19 while he was performing at a comedy show in Dubai. He claimed he received a call from Dubai Police directing him to report to police headquarters immediately.

According to the comedian, authorities took issue with a social media reel in which he joked about Google Maps allegedly malfunctioning in Dubai amid tensions linked to the conflict in the Middle East.
Describing the video as a lighthearted joke, Bhardwaj said he was surprised by the reaction it received. “It was a harmless, dumb reel,” he wrote, adding that authorities allegedly viewed it differently and treated him as a potential national security concern. He claimed he was subsequently detained and remained in custody for 47 days.
Returned to India in May
Bhardwaj said he was deported to India after spending nearly seven weeks in detention. According to his account, he returned on May 5 and has since been living in Mumbai.
The comedian acknowledged the challenges that followed the ordeal, saying the episode affected his mental well-being, disrupted his routine and placed additional strain on his family. He also noted that the experience carried financial consequences, though he did not elaborate on the extent of the losses.
Looking ahead after a difficult chapter
Despite the setback, Bhardwaj said he has gradually returned to performing and is focused on rebuilding his career. He credited Mumbai for helping him resume work sooner than expected and said he has already returned to the stage.
The comedian also revealed plans to spend time in Bengaluru, a city he described as significant to his journey in stand-up comedy. According to Bhardwaj, Bengaluru was where his passion for live performance first began nearly 16 years ago, making it a fitting place to start what he called a new chapter in his life.

Social media post sparks discussion
Bhardwaj's revelation has sparked conversations online about freedom of expression, cultural sensitivities and the risks content creators can face when performing or posting material across different jurisdictions. As of now, Dubai authorities have not publicly commented on the comedian's claims.
For Bhardwaj, however, the focus appears to be on moving forward. After weeks spent away from the stage, the comedian says he is determined to rebuild, reconnect with audiences and leave the difficult episode behind.
