Google unveiled several AI-focused updates during Google I/O 2026, including a new conversational search experience for YouTube. Called Ask YouTube, the feature is designed to help users find relevant video content more naturally using detailed questions instead of keyword-based searches.

YouTube gets conversational AI search

Google announced Ask YouTube at its annual Google I/O 2026 event. The feature allows users to ask complex or detailed questions on YouTube and refine searches through follow-up prompts. Powered by Gemini, the tool gathers results from across YouTube’s library, including Shorts and long-form videos, and presents them in a structured format with summaries and suggested videos.

According to Google, the feature aims to make video discovery more interactive and conversational. Instead of typing short search phrases, users can ask complete questions, such as how to teach a child to ride a bike or which cosy games are suitable before bedtime.

How Ask YouTube works

Google said Ask YouTube combines text summaries with video recommendations to help users quickly understand search results. Users can also continue the conversation with follow-up questions to narrow down or broaden recommendations. ([Gadgets 360][1])

The company clarified that this is different from the existing Ask button available on select videos. While the current Ask feature responds to questions related to a specific video, Ask YouTube functions as a broader search tool that helps users discover content across the entire platform.

At present, Ask YouTube is available through YouTube Labs for YouTube Premium subscribers in the US who are aged 18 or older. Google said a wider rollout for all users is planned in the coming months.

Gemini Omni comes to Shorts Remix

Google also announced that Gemini Omni will be integrated into YouTube Shorts Remix and the YouTube Create app. The company said the model can transform existing Shorts using text prompts and images while maintaining the context of the original video.

The remixed videos will carry AI labels along with links to the original source videos. Google added that creators will have the option to disable visual remixing if they do not want their content modified through AI tools.
