WhatsApp Web users ran into unexpected trouble on Tuesday afternoon, as many were unable to log in due to a strange, confusing error. Instead of accessing their chats, several users claimed they were redirected to Facebook's login page, another platform owned by Meta.
Passkey scan triggers unexpected redirect
The problem appeared during the login process. Users attempting to sign in via passkey scan using their mobile app said the web version did not load as expected. Instead, it led them to Facebook’s login interface, creating confusion and concern among users who do not link both platforms.

Outage reports spike globally
According to data from Downdetector, hundreds of users flagged issues related to WhatsApp during the same period. Reports were not limited to one region. Alongside users in the US, complaints also surfaced from parts of Asia, including Malaysia and Singapore.
In the US alone, more than 200 users reported disruptions. The complaints were categorised under WhatsApp services broadly, covering both the mobile application and browser-based access. Data indicated that 48% of the issues were linked to the website, 21% to the app, and 19% to login problems.
Users share frustration online
Social media platforms saw a wave of reactions from affected users.
“WhatsApp Down. When I'm trying to open WhatsApp Web, it shows the Facebook login page,” one user wrote, sharing a screenshot.
