US state secretary Marco Rubio’s first India visit from May 23-26 to focus on Quad, defence and trade talks

During the visit, he is scheduled to travel to Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur and New Delhi while holding discussions on trade, defence, energy and regional security.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will travel to India from May 23 to 26 for his first official visit to the country, with discussions expected to focus on trade, defence, energy and regional security cooperation.

The visit was announced by the US Department of State and will include stops in Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur and New Delhi.

State Department confirms four-day visit

Confirming the schedule, State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times, "Secretary Rubio will travel to India from May 23-26, where he will visit Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur, and New Delhi."

According to the State Department, Rubio is expected to hold meetings with senior Indian officials during the trip. The discussions will centre on strengthening bilateral cooperation in several key sectors.

"The Secretary will discuss energy, security, trade, and defence cooperation during meetings with senior Indian officials," Pigott said.

Rubio will arrive in India after attending the NATO Foreign Ministers meeting in Sweden on May 22.

Quad foreign ministers' meeting in New Delhi

During the visit, Rubio is also scheduled to attend a meeting of the Quad grouping in New Delhi. The Quad includes India, the United States, Australia and Japan.

The US embassy in New Delhi confirmed India will host the ministerial-level meeting and said it looked forward to welcoming Rubio "for his first visit to India, ministerial Quad meetings, high level engagements, and celebrating 250 years of America".

The Quad foreign ministers' meeting is expected to take place on May 26. External Affairs minister S Jaishankar will preside over the discussions, which are likely to focus on major global and regional developments, including the ongoing fallout from the West Asia crisis.

Australian Foreign minister Penny Wong and Japanese Foreign minister Motegi Toshimitsu are also expected to attend the meeting.

Rubio's India visit comes at a time when New Delhi and Washington continue to deepen cooperation across strategic and economic sectors. The trip is also expected to underline the growing importance of the Quad framework in addressing regional and global challenges.
