The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Jadavpur University Unit, has submitted two separate deputations to the Vice Chancellor, raising a series of demands related to campus infrastructure, student welfare, hostel facilities, safety and academic support at both the main Jadavpur University campus and the Jadavpur University Salt Lake (JUSL) Campus.
In the letters addressed to the Vice Chancellor, the student organisation urged the university administration to take immediate steps to address several long-pending issues that, according to it, are affecting students, research scholars, teachers and staff members.
The deputations cover concerns ranging from campus cleanliness and lighting to hostel facilities, library access, drinking water, sports infrastructure and scholarship assistance.
ABVP seeks infrastructure upgrades at JUSL Campus
In its deputation focused on the Salt Lake Campus, ABVP stated that despite being an integral part of the university, the campus "continues to face numerous infrastructural deficiencies and student welfare-related challenges that adversely affect the academic environment, student safety, and overall campus life."
The organisation said it had interacted with students residing in hostels and studying at the campus before placing its demands before the university administration.

Among its key demands is the establishment of a dedicated Scholarship Assistance Section to help students with information on scholarships, fellowships, financial assistance schemes, documentation and grievance redressal.
The deputation also calls for regular cleaning of the campus, removal of overgrown bushes and vegetation, and monthly maintenance to address safety concerns after snakes were reportedly spotted on multiple occasions.
Demands include 24x7 library, drinking water and transport
ABVP has also sought the installation of purified drinking water filters on every floor of the academic buildings to ensure uninterrupted access to safe drinking water.
It has demanded that the Salt Lake Campus Library remain open round the clock, particularly to support students during examinations, project work and research activities.
To improve connectivity, the organisation proposed operating university bus services at least three times a day, six days a week.
The deputation further requests that the Amenity Centre Gym remain open from 6 am to 10 am and from 4 pm to 8 pm, with the gym key kept under the custody of campus security personnel to ensure uninterrupted student access.
Hostel facilities and student services among major concerns
The student body has also sought renovation of campus washrooms, with at least two boys' and two girls' washrooms remaining open 24 hours a day for students residing on campus.
It demanded renovation of the JUSL Boys' Hostel gym and installation of necessary equipment.
Another major demand is the reopening of the hostel canteen through a transparent tender process within one month to provide affordable, hygienic and quality food for hostel residents.
The deputation also calls for the establishment of a chips and stationery shop within the campus, regular functioning of the Xerox centre on all working days, immediate repair of the damaged hostel and back gate, and installation of comprehensive CCTV surveillance across the entire Salt Lake Campus.
The letter states, "The above issues are directly related to student welfare, campus security, academic support, and the overall quality of campus life."
Main campus deputation highlights safety and sanitation issues
In a separate deputation concerning the main Jadavpur University campus, ABVP highlighted issues related to infrastructure, safety, sanitation and academic support.
The organisation said several parts of the campus remain poorly illuminated during the evening and night, particularly areas surrounding the School of Water Resources Engineering, the Hydraulics Laboratory and nearby Mechanical Engineering buildings.
According to the deputation, these conditions create safety concerns for students, research scholars and staff members, especially those who remain on campus beyond 9 pm.
ABVP has demanded immediate installation of high-mast and street lights, special attention to dark zones and regular maintenance of the existing lighting infrastructure.

Cleaning drives, water facilities and classroom maintenance demanded
The organisation also raised concerns over overgrown vegetation during the monsoon, claiming that bushes and weeds have become breeding grounds for mosquitoes while also providing shelter to snakes and harmful insects.
It sought immediate bush clearance, regular cleaning drives, mosquito control measures and periodic pest and snake control operations.
The deputation further called for the repair of the non-functional Water ATM near the Central Library, installation of additional water purification systems and regular monitoring of drinking water quality.
ABVP also demanded cleaning and modernisation of hostel premises, regular maintenance of departmental washrooms, construction of additional toilets across the campus and periodic repair of classrooms, broken windows and damaged furniture.
The organisation additionally sought uninterrupted availability of classroom essentials such as chalks, dusters and whiteboard markers.
Hostel allotment and official email IDs among academic demands
The deputation also requested scientific pruning and removal of dead trees and hazardous branches to prevent accidents during storms.
Another demand relates to hostel allotment, with ABVP urging the administration to complete allotment for eligible undergraduate and postgraduate students before the commencement of the academic session so that students from distant districts and states can attend classes without accommodation-related difficulties.
It also sought immediate issuance of official university email IDs to postgraduate students to enable access to academic databases, digital libraries, research journals and institutional subscriptions.
Concluding the letter, ABVP said, "The issues highlighted above are directly related to student welfare, safety, academic excellence, research activities, and the overall reputation of Jadavpur University."
The organisation further stated that it "remains committed to constructive engagement and the betterment of the university" and expressed hope that the administration would take prompt action and inform the student community about the steps undertaken.
