Greece has launched a dedicated constellation of four small satellites to help spot wildfires earlier and support emergency crews on the ground, marking what the European Space Agency describes as a world first for a national satellite capability focused on wildfire detection and tracking.
The system was developed amid Greece’s worsening exposure to destructive fires and is intended to provide systematic coverage across the country, adding a space-based layer to the country’s firefighting response.

Satellite launch and AI technology
The four CubeSats were launched on 3 May 2026 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 CAS500-2 mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, according to ESA.
Built by German company OroraTech, the satellites carry thermal sensors that can flag fires as small as four meters (13 feet) across, while AI is used to filter out false positives such as hot rooftops, solar panels, and sunbaked rock faces before alerts are sent to authorities.
The mission was carried out with support from the Greek government, ESA, and the EU-funded Recovery and Resilience Facility.

How the system detects fires
ESA said the satellites are based on an 8U CubeSat platform and carry infrared imagers that can detect active fires, identify thermal anomalies, and measure flame radiative intensity.
That data is intended to give commanders location, size, and intensity information almost immediately, improving response when multiple fires break out at once.
Fire Service Col. Zisoula Ntasiou told The Associated Press that prioritization matters when several blazes are burning simultaneously, while Greece’s minister of digital governance and AI, Dimitrios Papastergiou, said, “Today marks a major step forward in strengthening Greece’s national resilience against wildfires.”
Greece's wider space ambitions
The launch also fits into a broader Greek space program. ESA said the Hellenic Fire System is the second operational Earth-observation mission under the Greek National Small Satellite Program, following two radar satellites launched last year. The program is ultimately expected to include 13 satellites arranged in four groups.
OroraTech announced that it will closely monitor the new constellation before fully commissioning it in the coming months. Officials hope the system will bolster early detection, monitoring, and fire characterization capabilities during increasingly severe wildfire seasons.
