The Central Board of Secondary Education has formulated a revised school curriculum in line with the National Education Policy 2020. There are considerable changes in learning languages and skills in the revised curriculum.

According to the revised curriculum, a third language will be added in Class 6 from the 2026-27 academic session. Additionally, artificial intelligence and vocational courses will be made compulsory for students in Class 9 and 10.

CBSE Chairman Rahul Singh clarified that the three-language formula will be fully implemented by the time the current Class 6 cohort reaches Class 10 board exams in 2031.

Three-language formula explained

The revised structure requires students to study at least two Indian languages along with a third language. In schools where English is taught from Class 6, it will be treated as the foreign language, alongside two Indian languages.

If students opt for other foreign languages such as French or German, they will still be required to study two Indian languages.

This marks a shift from the existing system, where most students study only two languages.

Focus on skills and holistic learning

The new curriculum is not only focused on languages but also emphasises skill development and holistic education.

Art education, physical education, and vocational education are to become compulsory for Class 9 and 10 students.

While art and physical education will still remain internal assessment-based, vocational education is to become a compulsory subject with board exams from the 2027-28 academic session.

Computational thinking and artificial intelligence are also to become part of the curriculum as a module with internal assessment for now, before becoming a compulsory board exam subject for Class 10 students in 2029.

These subjects are also being introduced for students in Classes 3 to 8 in this academic year. The rollout of this curriculum is to happen gradually to help schools and students adjust to the changes. It is a part of a larger move towards incorporating technology, critical thinking, and skill development in schools.
