Actor Aamir Khan has reportedly finalised his next major film project, choosing to move ahead with filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker’s upcoming sports drama while delaying Rajkumar Hirani’s much-anticipated 3 Idiots sequel until mid-2027.

Another cricket drama after Lagaan ?

According to a report by Variety India, Aamir had been considering both projects simultaneously before ultimately prioritising Gowariker’s directorial venture. The upcoming film is said to be based on the historic 1952 India-Pakistan Test series and will reportedly feature Aamir in the role of legendary Indian cricketer Lala Amarnath.

The report further stated that actor-filmmaker Farhan Akhtar has been confirmed for a pivotal role in the project and is also backing the film as a producer. Farhan will reportedly play one of four close friends of Aamir’s character in the film. Both actors, along with the rest of the cast, are expected to undergo extensive cricket training in preparation for their roles.

Hirani’s blockbuster still in progress

According to industry insiders, Aamir decided to prioritise Gowariker’s film largely because the script is said to be at a more advanced stage of development compared to the sequel to 3 Idiots. The sports drama has reportedly been written by Piyush Gupta and Neeraj Singh.

Meanwhile, work on the sequel to 3 Idiots is still in progress. Director Rajkumar Hirani is reportedly continuing to develop the screenplay alongside writer Abhijat Joshi. Sources suggest that the delay has been a mutual decision between Hirani and Aamir, with both keen to ensure that the sequel meets the high expectations attached to the iconic franchise.

Released in 2009, 3 Idiots emerged as one of the most successful and influential Hindi films of its time. The film starred Aamir Khan, R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor, and Boman Irani in lead roles and went on to achieve massive commercial and critical success.

With Aamir now shifting his focus to the cricket-based period drama, fans may have to wait a little longer before the actor reunites with Hirani for the next chapter of 3 Idiots.
