Actor Sanjay Dutt appeared before the National Commission for Women (NCW) on Monday regarding the “Sarke Chunar Teri Sarke” controversy from the film “KD The Devil”. He submitted a written apology, expressing regret for any “unintended” harm caused to society.

The hearing was chaired by NCW chief Vijaya Rahatkar, who raised concerns over alleged vulgar and indecent portrayal of women in the song. The commission asked about the purpose and responsibility behind making it, and said that public figures should be careful and responsible in such matters.

NCW hearing: what concerns were raised about the song?

According to a Times of India report, the NCW raised concerns about the way women were shown and the chairperson asked if proper checks were done before joining the project. She also said that famous people should be careful and make sure their work follows the law and respects dignity. Sanjay Dutt said he will ensure future agreements include legal checks for responsible portrayal of women and children.

What did Sanjay Dutt promise as part of his apology?

As per Times of India reports, as a corrective step, actor Sanjay Dutt pledged to sponsor the education of 50 tribal girl children, focusing on women’s empowerment and social welfare. The NCW welcomed this assurance and stressed the importance of responsibility in public content. It also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the dignity and fair representation of women in media.

What led to the controversy, backlash, and about film details

The Hindi version of the song, released on March 15 on YouTube, faced strong public backlash over sexually explicit lyrics and was later removed after criticism. The film “KD The Devil” is a Kannada production dubbed in multiple languages, including Hindi, and is scheduled for release on April 30.

The film stars Dhruva Sarja, V Ravichandran, Ramesh Aravind, Shilpa Shetty, and Sanjay Dutt. The issue was also raised in the Lok Sabha, where Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the song had already been banned adding that action can be taken against vulgar content. The issue was also discussed in the Lok Sabha during Question Hour last month by Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Anand Bhadoria.

According to Times of India reports, Nora Fatehi clarified that she only shot for the Kannada version and her consent was not taken for the Hindi release. Other members of the team, including the director, lyricist, and production representatives, have also issued apologies before the commission.

The NCW said that people should use creative freedom carefully and also respect social rules and values. It added that creators should be responsible for the content they show to many people.

Sanjay Dutt’s apology and his pledge to support education for tribal girls is seen as a corrective step in the controversy. The case also highlights increasing scrutiny over how women are portrayed in films.
