The first trailer of Verity has dropped, offering a tense glimpse into a psychological thriller led by Dakota Johnson and Anne Hathaway. Adapted from Verity by bestselling author Colleen Hoover, the film promises a story layered with secrets, obsession and unsettling revelations.

The trailer introduces a haunting tone early on, with Hathaway’s character delivering an ominous warning: “There is no light where we’re going.”

A story built on secrets and psychological tension

The story centers around Lowen Ashleigh (Johnson), an underachieving author tasked with finishing a novel series written by successful novelist Verity Crawford (Hathaway), who can no longer do so following an incident.

As Lowen settles in the Crawford residence to go through the manuscripts, she starts to unravel some unsettling information from the notes of Verity, facts which seem to be more than just literary fiction.

Jeremy Crawford (Hartnett), Verity’s spouse, also shares a close yet tangled connection with Lowen, as suggested by the trailer, although Verity still appears to be a dominant figure, even confined mostly to her bed.

First look builds anticipation ahead of release

The trailer, first unveiled at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, leans heavily into suspense, using fragmented visuals and shifting dynamics between characters to build intrigue.

Directed by Michael Showalter, the film marks another collaboration with Hathaway following The Idea of You. The screenplay has been penned by Nick Antosca, with contributions from multiple writers during development.

The project also continues a growing trend of adaptations from Hoover’s literary universe, following the success of titles such as It Ends With Us and Reminders of Him.

Release date locked

Verity is scheduled to hit theatres on October 2, 2026, positioning itself as one of the most anticipated thriller adaptations of the year.

With its mix of romance, psychological suspense and unreliable narration, the film appears set to tap into the same gripping appeal that made Hoover’s novel a bestseller.
