The actor has now stated that there will be a sequel to the popular Bollywood movie 3 Idiots released in 2009. This announcement ends speculation about whether there would ever be a sequel to one of Bollywood’s biggest movies ever.

In an interview with Amar Ujala, Khan stated that the script for the sequel was ready and had been narrated to him. "At this time, he is working on ‘3 Idiots 2’. I have heard that narration. It has turned out well… the story is very good. It has the same humour and an unusual story."

A familiar story, set years later

According to Aamir, the sequel will carry forward the essence of the original film while introducing a fresh narrative. The story is expected to be set roughly a decade after the events of the first film.

He also hinted at returning to play the role of Phunsukh Wangdu, popularly known as Rancho, a character that became a cultural touchstone after the film’s release.

“This is one of the films I will be working on soon… I think it's a beautiful story and Abhijat and Raju have written it very well,” he said, referring to writer Abhijat Joshi and director Rajkumar Hirani.

Original cast likely to return

While an official cast announcement is awaited, reports suggest that the sequel may reunite the original ensemble, including R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi and Kareena Kapoor.

Earlier, Sharman Joshi had expressed hope about a sequel in an interview with Hindustan Times, noting that discussions around a follow-up had surfaced multiple times over the years.

A legacy that shaped pop culture

Despite being released way back in 2009, 3 Idiots is still considered to be one of the most significant films produced by Bollywood due to the themes of education, aspiration, and individualism portrayed in the movie. One of the lead characters, Phunsukh Wangdu, was based on Sonam Wangchuk, a teacher famous for developing non-conventional education models in Ladakh.

This sequel intends to continue his legacy with a fresh narrative.
