Rajpal Yadav, best known for his comic roles, has landed in jail after a long-running cheque bounce case. The actor surrendered at Tihar Jail last week after the Delhi High Court rejected his final plea for relief. The case involves unpaid dues running into crores and has followed him for more than a decade.

Emotional moment before surrender

Before turning himself in, Rajpal Yadav made an emotional statement that reflected his distress. As reported by NewsX, he said, "Sir, kya karoon? Mere paas paise nahin hain. Aur koi upaay nahin dikhta… Sir, yahan hum sab akele hain. There are no friends. I have to deal with this crisis on my own."

The statement quickly drew attention, with many expressing sympathy as the actor faced one of the toughest phases of his life.

Why Rajpal Yadav was sent to jail

The legal trouble dates back to 2010, when Rajpal Yadav borrowed ₹5 crore from Murali Projects Pvt Ltd to produce his film Ata Pata Laapata. After the film failed at the box office, he struggled to repay the loan. Several cheques issued by him bounced, leading to legal action.

In 2018, a Magistrate’s Court convicted Rajpal Yadav and his wife under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act and sentenced them to six months in jail. Though the actor challenged the verdict and received multiple extensions to clear the dues, the pending amount reportedly rose to nearly ₹9 crore over time. He did make partial repayments, including ₹75 lakh in 2025.

The Delhi High Court, however, took a strict view of repeated failures to honour court undertakings. On Thursday, it rejected his last attempt to avoid imprisonment and ordered him to surrender before any further hearing.
