Actor Rajpal Yadav surrendered before jail authorities at Tihar Jail on Thursday after the Delhi High Court refused to grant him any further relief in a long-running cheque-bounce matter.
According to Press Trust of India (PTI), a jail source confirmed that Yadav surrendered at around 4 pm. “He surrendered before the jail authorities on Thursday. The standard operating procedure will now be followed,” the source said.

Court refuses more time to repay dues
A day earlier, the High Court declined Yadav’s request for an extension of the surrender deadline. His counsel had informed the court that ₹50 lakh had been arranged and sought one additional week to complete the payment. The court, however, refused to extend the time granted earlier.
Rejecting the plea, the bench observed that courts cannot create exceptions based on a person’s profession or public standing. “This Court cannot be expected to show or create special circumstances for any person merely because such a person belongs to a particular background or industry. Leniency, though sometimes necessary, cannot be extended endlessly, especially when it is met with continued non-compliance,” the court said.
Yadav had earlier been directed to surrender by 4 pm on February 2.
What is the case about?
The case stems from a complaint filed by M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd against Rajpal Yadav and his wife over several cheques that were dishonoured and the failure to repay the outstanding amount.

In 2018, a magisterial court in Delhi convicted Yadav and his wife in the cheque-bounce cases and sentenced the actor to six months’ imprisonment. A sessions court upheld the conviction in 2019. The couple later challenged the verdict before the Delhi High Court.
In June 2024, the High Court temporarily suspended the sentence after urging the actor to take “sincere and genuine measures” to explore an amicable settlement with the complainant. However, earlier this month, the court noted repeated breaches of undertakings given by Yadav to clear the dues and directed him to surrender.
