Abhijeet Sawant speaks on pay and royalty issues
Abhijeet Sawant, who rose to fame after winning Indian Idol, later sang in multiple music videos and Marathi films. He claims that singers are exploited in Bollywood. According to him, "People don't want the singers to become bigger than the film itself. That's why they are paid a certain amount. Musicians still don't receive royalties for film music." He also added that if a singer works in a Western production, they can earn enough to survive their entire life by just relying on earnings generated from those works alone.
Abhijeet expressed his frustration over the system, "They have created a system like that. Singers are themselves greedy for opportunities, and they know that 'if this song gets released in my voice, with some big star lip-syncing. Then I can use this song for my entire life."
Singers settle for less, claims Abhijeet
Abhijeet also expressed dissatisfaction with the mindset of singers themselves. He alleged that many singers do not demand fair compensation and are eager to work with specific producers or simply want the opportunity to sing. As he put it, “We accept whatever amount we get, because if we don't do it, someone else will. We get exploited a lot.”
