Bollywood star Aamir Khan has decided to shift his focus back to acting after taking a break from films following the 2022 setback of Laal Singh Chaddha. The actor made his comeback in 2025 with Sitaare Zameen Par and has now announced a major change at his production banner, Aamir Khan Productions (AKP).

In an interview with Variety India, Aamir Khan revealed that he has stepped away from actively running his production house and handed over the reins to Aparna Purohit. Speaking about the decision, he said, “I’ve taken a big decision. My company, Aamir Khan Productions, is now being headed by Aparna Purohit. All the projects that we had greenlit before she came on board are releasing in 2026. There is Happy Patel, which has just released, and Ek Din and Lahore 1947 will also release.”
He added, “Aparna is highly capable of handling the entire production house on her own. Of course, I am there if needed, but I want her to independently run AKP. That’s my state of mind right now. I am quite excited about reading different stories and am wondering what to pick next.”
Who is Aparna Purohit?
Aparna Purohit is the new CEO of Aamir Khan Productions. She holds a BA (Hons) in Journalism from Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University, and an MA in Mass Communications, Films and TV from Jamia Millia Islamia’s Mass Communication Research Centre.
She began her career as a line producer at UTV Motion Pictures and later worked with BIG Pictures and Reliance Big Entertainment. Aparna then joined Amazon Prime Video, where she rose to become Head of Creative Development, followed by Head of India Originals in 2019. In 2022, she was promoted to Head of Indian & SEA Originals. During her tenure, she led major projects such as Made in Heaven, Paatal Lok, The Family Man and Mirzapur.

What’s next for Aamir Khan Productions
Aparna joined Aamir Khan Productions as CEO in 2024 and led Sitaare Zameen Par, an official remake of the Spanish film Champions. The film went on to become a box office success, earning ₹267.34 crore worldwide.
While the films released so far were greenlit by Aamir, he confirmed that Aparna will take full charge of future decisions. The next AKP release is Ek Din, starring Junaid Khan and Sai Pallavi, scheduled to hit theatres on May 1.
