Germany's 2-1 defeat to Ecuador in their final FIFA World Cup 2026 Group E match has led to contrasting views within the camp, with captain Joshua Kimmich and striker Deniz Undav disagreeing with head coach Julian Nagelsmann's assessment of the performance.
Despite already securing qualification for the Round of 32, Germany failed to finish the group stage on a high as Ecuador came from behind to claim a memorable victory. While the result did not affect Germany's progress, it raised fresh questions ahead of the knockout stage.
Kimmich and Undav differ from Nagelsmann
Nagelsmann rejected suggestions that his players lacked commitment, insisting the team gave everything despite the defeat. He said Germany's performance was affected by squad rotation and fatigue rather than a lack of desire.

Kimmich, however, admitted Ecuador looked more determined throughout the contest. The German captain said the South American side showed greater hunger and intensity, especially after the interval. He also stressed that Germany must improve defensively and avoid giving away possession cheaply if they are to challenge for the World Cup.

Undav shared a similar view, saying Ecuador simply wanted to win more than Germany. His comments echoed Kimmich's assessment and contrasted with Nagelsmann's defence of the team's display.
Germany turns its focus to the knockout stage
Germany took an early lead through Leroy Sane but failed to build on their advantage. Ecuador equalised before Gonzalo Plata scored the winner in the second half to complete the comeback.

Nagelsmann admitted his side lost control of the game after going ahead and said the team must remain composed when leading matches. He also defended his decision to rotate the squad, explaining that several players needed rest before the knockout rounds.
Although Germany suffered their first defeat of the tournament, they still finished top of Group E and progressed to the Round of 32. The coaching staff is expected to recall its strongest lineup for the next match as the four-time champions aim to bounce back and keep their World Cup campaign on track.
