US President Donald Trump on Friday accused Iran of launching four one-way attack drones at commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, describing the incident as a "foolish" breach of the ceasefire agreement between the two countries.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed that one of the drones struck the upper deck of a cargo ship, while US forces intercepted the remaining three before they could reach their targets.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran shot at least four One Way Attack Drones at Ships transversing the Strait of Hormuz. One of the Drones solidly hit the upper deck of a large and very expensive cargo-carrying ship," Trump wrote.

He further said, "Damage was done, but the Ship was able to proceed on its way. We knocked down three other Drones. Obviously, this is a foolish violation of our Ceasefire Agreement."

Trump did not name the vessel involved or specify when the alleged attack took place.

UK agency reported projectile strike near Oman

Trump's remarks came a day after the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that an unidentified projectile near the coast of Oman had struck a cargo vessel.

According to the British maritime security agency, the ship was struck on its starboard side, damaging the bridge. The incident occurred about 7.5 nautical miles, or nearly 14 kilometres, off the Omani coast. No injuries were reported, and the vessel was able to continue its voyage.

The UKMTO statement did not identify the projectile or attribute responsibility for the incident.

Ceasefire talks continue despite tensions

The latest claims come as Washington and Tehran continue negotiations aimed at turning the temporary ceasefire into a permanent agreement.

Officials from both sides are working through key issues, including ensuring the safe movement of commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and deciding the future of Iran's stockpile of highly enriched uranium.

Under the interim agreement reached earlier this month, the US and Iran have a 60-day window to finalise the terms of a broader deal. The ceasefire remains in place, although recent developments highlight the fragile security situation in the region.
