The murder probe linked to Pune businessman Ketan Agarwal has taken on a fresh twist after his family pushed back against speculation that his use of a wig or hair patch triggered the crime.

Police say Agarwal was pushed to his death from Lohagad Fort near Pune on June 18 by his fiancee, Siya Goyal, and her boyfriend, Chetan Chaudhary, after what they describe as a premeditated conspiracy.

The case was first registered as an accidental death, but investigators later said CCTV footage, call records, and other material pointed toward foul play.

Father's rebuttal to the wig theory

Ketan’s father, Vishal Agarwal, said his son’s hair loss had been disclosed well before the wedding plans were finalized and rejected the idea that it had been hidden from Siya’s family.

“If she had any issues, she should have said no,” he said, adding that it would have been easy to call off the engagement if the matter had been a problem. His comments came as the wig angle began to circulate more widely in reporting on the case, even as police maintained that the alleged motive could not be explained by the hair patch alone.

Police outline the alleged conspiracy

Police believe the two accused planned to kill Ketan before a scheduled pre-wedding photoshoot in Bali, a trip that was later cancelled after his passport went missing.

Investigators also said call records showed thousands of calls between Siya and Chetan, including conversations lasting several hours, and that earlier attempts were allegedly made to push Ketan from the cliff on previous visits to the fort.

Police arrested both on charges of murder and criminal conspiracy, while the father’s statement added another layer to the public dispute over what drove the killing.

Conflicting narratives and the legal road ahead

The family of Siya Goyal has rejected the police version in parts, saying she was reluctant to go to Lohagad Fort on the day of the incident and had told her mother she did not want to trek.

Her parents have also said the wedding was planned for November in Udaipur and that there had been no sign she wanted to break off the engagement.

On Friday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis met Vishal Agarwal in Pune and accepted the family’s demand for a fast-track trial and the appointment of senior lawyer Ujjwal Nikam as special public prosecutor. “This is not merely a criminal issue; it also has a social angle,” Fadnavis said.
