IMD predicts thunderstorms in northeast, temperature surge across India this week

IMD forecasts thunderstorms in the Northeast alongside a steady rise in temperatures across several parts of India this week.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued its latest forecast for the coming days, indicating a mix of rainfall, thunderstorms, and rising temperatures across different parts of the country. The update, released by the Ministry of Earth Sciences, highlights weather over the Northeast and a gradual warming trend elsewhere.

Fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds is likely over Assam and Meghalaya between April 10 and April 14. Wind speeds may reach 30 to 40 kmph during this period.

Arunachal Pradesh is expected to witness isolated heavy rainfall between April 10 and April 14, along with lightning activity. Similar thunderstorm conditions are forecast for Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on April 10 and 11.

Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are likely to receive scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds from April 10 to April 12. Odisha may also experience similar conditions on April 10.

Temperatures to rise across multiple regions

The IMD has predicted a gradual increase in maximum temperatures across several parts of the country. Northwest India may see a rise of 6 to 8 degrees Celsius between April 10 and April 16.

Central India is expected to record a temperature increase of 3 to 5 degrees Celsius until April 14, while East India may witness a sharper rise of 5 to 7 degrees Celsius during the same period.

In western regions, Gujarat is likely to see temperatures rise by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius till April 13, while Maharashtra may experience an increase of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius till April 14. No significant change is expected after these dates.

Heatwave and humidity outlook

Heatwave conditions are likely in isolated parts of Chhattisgarh from April 14 to 16 and in Odisha on April 13 and 14. Hot and humid weather is expected in Gangetic West Bengal between April 13 and April 15.

Coastal regions, including Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, are also likely to experience hot and humid conditions on specified dates through the week.

Delhi-NCR forecast

Delhi-NCR is expected to see mainly clear skies over the next two days. On April 12, maximum temperatures are likely to range between 35 and 37 degrees Celsius, with minimum temperatures between 19 and 21 degrees Celsius.

On April 13, the maximum temperature may rise further to 36 to 38 degrees Celsius. Surface winds from the northwest are expected to pick up during the day, with speeds increasing in the afternoon before easing by evening.
