The Government of India is planning to launch Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication technology towards the end of 2026. This system will help vehicles to communicate directly with each other without the necessity for a network. The initiative looks forward to ensuring road safety and lessening the number of accidents across the country.

What is V2V technology?

According to NDTV, this technology is set to be particularly useful in stopping accidents, which include both parked vehicles and fast-moving traffic from behind. It will also help avoid large-scale queues during dense fog in the winter season. This system will allow vehicles to exchange signals and send alerts when another vehicle approaches a close distance.

Implementation and comments

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari conveyed the details of the initiative after the annual meeting with state road transport ministers. He said that the matter was examined during the meeting, and the technology will be enforced soon.

Nitin Gadkari said this system is anticipated to support the reduction in accidents, especially in cases where vehicles are parked on roads and fast-moving vehicles from behind often collide with them and during fog. He also highlighted the importance of the Bus Body Code, stating that poor bus design has led to at least six major accidents in which 135 people lost their lives. The estimated project cost is around Rs 5000 crore. Consumers will be charged for this system, but prices are not disclosed yet.

The Transport Ministry is working to enforce the technology by the end of 2026. The V2V communication system will work in association with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). There are certain premium SUVs that will have similar technology, but it will function on sensors, not on a network.
