The government has officially disclosed, for the first time, the identities of six Indian armed forces personnel who lost their lives during Operation Sindoor, the military operation launched against terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in May 2025.

The names of the fallen soldiers have been published in the Roll of Honour on the National War Memorial website and engraved at the National War Memorial in New Delhi, marking the first formal public acknowledgement of casualties suffered by the Indian armed forces during the operation.

The personnel honoured include Subedar Major Pawan Kumar of Headquarters 10 Infantry Brigade, Rifleman Sunil Kumar, Vir Chakra, of 4 Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry, Lance Naik Dinesh Kumar of 5 Field Regiment, Aviation Technician Mood Muralinaik of 851 Light Regiment, Havildar Sunil Kumar Singh of 237 Field Workshop Company, and Sergeant Surendra Kumar, Vayu Medal, of 39 Wing.

Their names have been inscribed on Wall 3D of the National War Memorial under the 2025 section dedicated to personnel who made the supreme sacrifice in service of the nation.

First official confirmation of Operation Sindoor casualties

Until now, the government had not officially identified any military personnel killed during Operation Sindoor, despite widespread reports and speculation following the four-day military confrontation between India and Pakistan in May 2025.

The inclusion of the six names in the National War Memorial's Roll of Honour effectively serves as the first official confirmation of casualties sustained during the operation.

Operation Sindoor was launched on May 7, 2025, following the April 22 terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, in which 26 civilians, most of them tourists, were killed. During the operation, Indian armed forces carried out precision strikes on nine terror-linked locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, targeting infrastructure allegedly associated with terror groups including Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Military action between the two countries ceased on May 10 after discussions between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan.

Army and Air Force personnel among those honoured

The names released indicate that personnel from both the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force lost their lives during the operation, reflecting the coordinated nature of Operation Sindoor.

Among those honoured are Rifleman Sunil Kumar, who was posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra, and Sergeant Surendra Kumar, a recipient of the Vayu Medal, underscoring the role of decorated personnel during the operation.

The National War Memorial, inaugurated in 2019 near India Gate in New Delhi, commemorates members of India's armed forces who have laid down their lives in service after Independence. The addition of the six names formally records Operation Sindoor in the memorial's history of military operations and sacrifices.

The information regarding the names of the personnel and their inclusion in the National War Memorial has been published by the Government of India through the National War Memorial's Roll of Honour records.
