Prabhjeet Singh, Uber’s India and South Asia president, is moving to OpenAI as the artificial intelligence company’s India managing director, a leadership change that underscores the growing importance of India in global AI expansion plans.

OpenAI's India play
At OpenAI, Singh will be responsible for India operations across consumer growth, enterprise adoption, strategic partnerships, regulatory engagement, and broader business operations.
The move comes as major AI companies look to strengthen partnerships with local technology and services firms in India. OpenAI is partnering with the Tata Group in India on artificial intelligence technologies, including data center infrastructure, which could become one of the largest in the country.
OpenAI has noted in a recent report that Indian users are among the top adopters of ChatGPT’s advanced capabilities, including data analysis, coding, and education.

A résumé fit for the occasion
Singh brings more than a decade of experience at Uber and a consulting background to the new job. Before joining Uber in 2015, he worked at McKinsey & Company as an associate partner.
He is an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur and IIM Ahmedabad. At Uber, Singh oversaw the company’s mobility business across India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka and helped drive the next phase of growth and expansion in the region. That track record gives OpenAI a senior India executive with deep exposure to consumer platforms, partnerships, and operational scaling in a fast-moving market.
Uber's farewell
Uber confirmed on Friday that Singh is moving on to another leadership opportunity but did not name a successor.
An Uber spokesperson said, “We thank Prabhjeet for his leadership and lasting contributions in his decade-long journey with Uber—we remain deeply committed to our next phase of growth in India.”
The spokesperson added that India is one of Uber’s most important markets globally and “an important driver of innovation and long-term growth.” The company has yet to announce who will take over Singh’s responsibilities.
