Travellers heading to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) from Thane could soon see a dramatic reduction in travel time. A proposed elevated corridor, estimated to cost around Rs 6,300 crore, is expected to provide a direct connection between Thane and the airport, reducing the journey to roughly 30 minutes, per a report by News18.

The project is being developed by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) and has been positioned as a key infrastructure initiative to support the airport's operations and improve connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

What the project includes

The corridor will be a six-lane elevated road stretching approximately 25-26 kilometres. It is designed to provide a signal-free route between Thane and NMIA, helping commuters avoid some of the region's busiest traffic bottlenecks, reported News18.

The route is expected to begin near Patni Chowk in Thane and connect with major road networks before reaching the airport. Reports indicate that parts of the corridor may feature a double-decker design to maximise available space and improve traffic flow.

As per the report of News18, officials estimate that the project could reduce travel time from the current 60-90 minutes to around 30 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.

Who will benefit

The corridor is expected to benefit not only residents of Thane but also commuters from nearby areas including Kalyan, Dombivli, Bhiwandi, Ambernath, Badlapur and Mira-Bhayander. By offering a faster route to the airport, authorities hope to reduce pressure on existing roads such as the Thane-Belapur Road and Eastern Express Highway.

The project is also expected to support the long-term growth of NMIA, which is being developed to complement Mumbai's existing airport and handle increasing passenger traffic in the region.

Challenges ahead

While the proposal has generated excitement, it still faces several hurdles. Sections of the planned route pass through environmentally sensitive areas, including mangrove zones and coastal regulation regions. These stretches will require multiple approvals and environmental clearances before construction can proceed.

Land acquisition, regulatory permissions and construction timelines will also play a crucial role in determining when the project becomes operational. Officials have indicated that environmental approvals will be among the most important factors influencing progress.

Part of a larger connectivity push

The elevated corridor is one of several infrastructure projects being planned around Navi Mumbai International Airport. Other initiatives include new metro links, road corridors and creek crossings aimed at improving access from different parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

As NMIA prepares to become a major aviation hub, authorities are focusing on creating multiple transport links to ensure smoother movement of passengers and reduce congestion on existing routes.
