Uttarakhand is on the verge of significant changes in adventure tourism, with the state government developing a specific regulation for bungee jumping operations in the state.
The action is expected to bolster safety measures and create better surveillance at popular adventure tourism hubs, including Rishikesh.
A new safety framework
The Uttarakhand tourism department has been preparing the necessary norms for the bungee jumping places in the state, officials in the department said per the Hindustan Times.
The program is a follow up to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that look to make adventure tourism facilities safer.

The proposed framework is likely to clarify the standards that operators will need to meet with respect to operation, equipment maintenance, staff qualifications, emergency preparedness, and visitor safety. A formal rulebook is believed, will help to eradicate inconsistencies and standardise safety measures between all the bungee jumping sites.
Emphasis on tourist protection
The regulations' chief aim is to keep tourists safe, officials have said to The Times of India. As per the already implemented SOP, operators are expected to keep comprehensive safety records, inspect equipment and have the trained and certified jump masters. There is also a greater focus on third party insurance for participants.
The new regulations are likely to be developed from the national adventure tourism guidelines which call for strict checks on equipments, a maintenance plan with documentation, rescue plans and internationally recognized safety standards for bungee jumping activities.
Increased monitoring at adventure Sites
In recent years, adventure tourism has boomed in popular destinations like Rishikesh, Shivpuri and Mohanchatti.
Tourism authorities have reportedly started to enforce SOPs and inspect bungee jumping centres. The new system will take action against operators who don't live up to the safety standards.
